An amazing lighting show by the incredible lighting designers Chris Moylan & Raphaël Demonthy @sunrise_studios_gmbh
for #BMW #bmwvision
Interview of Chris Moylan by Minuit Une:
MinuitUne: For an event like this what constraints did you have to work within?
Chris Moylan: The artists were behind the LED screen in a ‘black box’, with all lighting elements either on their podium or flown above. After this musical moment, the LED screen closed briefly, and everything was flown up and rolled off – then the screen opened again to reveal a long tunnel of fabric with the Vision concept Car framed perfectly in the middle. So everything needed to be offstage in under a minute to create this surprise for the guests.
MinuitUne: The colour scheme is very warm, why this choice ?
Chris Moylan: We were trying to stay close to the classical elements associated with acoustic instruments like the piano. Starting with pure warm white halogen sources let us transport this feeling. We then added the Photons to this look, transporting the marriage of classic elements with high technology!
MinuitUne: What makes you decide to use the IVL?
Chris Moylan: We needed a solution that we could program from the lighting console and that was safe for audience and camera. Also the Photon has a very unique form which looks nice as a stage object.
MinuitUne: Why the IVL and not stick with usual lights ?
Chris Moylan: The idea for this entire concept was to showcase the new BMW car using a mix of classic beauty and technology. The musical artist Grandbrothers also uses an acoustic piano with custom pickups and effects creating a very unique blend of classic and electronic sound. This was exactly what our lighting concept reflected : A mix of warm white halogen sources (classic) and Photon lasers representing this same mix of classic elements and new technology.
MinuitUne: You’ve got the photon with Portman lightings : a great combination?
Chris Moylan: Yes! For the reasons above and also the hexagonal shape of the P3 matches great with the Photon’s Octagonal form!
