“For Daniela Pes’ 2024 tour, I needed something that would add depth and a unique touch to the basic design I had already created,” explains Giuseppe “Porky” Tomasi , Lighting designer for Daniela Pes and designer of the Robot Festival in Bologna, Italia. “The available space was limited, so I had to focus on fixtures that, even in small quantities, could deliver a significant effect. The IVL Photon, supplied by Sonique S.r.l. Rental Audio Luci in Milan, was the perfect solution. With just two units, I achieved an extraordinary result.”

Even with a reduced number of units, these products can have an exponential visual impact. “It was my first time using them live, and I must admit, I was impressed by their expressive potential. So much so that I decided to base my next design on them, especially for a show that will require an immersive atmosphere,” says Tomasi.

The fifteenth edition of the Robot Festival, the pioneering event in Bologna dedicated to electronic music and digital arts, featured an innovative light show, thanks in part to the use of IVL Photon. The festival hosted internationally renowned artists, including Daniela Pes, who concluded her tour with a special performance at Binario Centrale in the Dumbo space, after performing on major stages worldwide. The lighting for Pes’ show, as well as the entire space, was designed by Giuseppe “Porky” Tomasi, the festival’s lighting designer and responsible for the Italian tour of the artist.

“One of the main features that convinced me to use the IVL Photon was the ability to integrate real lasers into the show without the regulatory restrictions often associated with these devices. This was a crucial advantage for me, as the fixtures had to be placed in front of the audience, making the most of the light’s refraction and reflection properties.”

The design setup featured three 3-meter booms with single-pixel LED strips and columns integrated with pixel matrices and floor spots. “I was unsure how to distribute the IVL Photon, but in the end, I decided to place two of them between the booms, creating a symmetrical composition. The result was a perfect integration between the artist, reflections, and the movement of the Photon mirrors, blending with the gobos and prisms of the spots.”

The IVL Photon can be both elegant and aggressive, depending on the context. This allowed me to add dynamism to the show, making it engaging for the audience.”

Another strength of the IVL Photon is their ease of use, both in terms of hardware and programming. “Minuit Une did an excellent job making these products accessible even to less experienced lighting designers. They provided basic shows for various lighting consoles, making it easier to understand how they work.”

“Thanks to their versatility and power, I was able to create a visually captivating show without worrying about the usual complications of standard lasers. I can’t wait to use them in my future projects,” concludes the LD.
