‘Illusioner’ play at Malmö Stadsteater

Malmo, Sweden
LD : Sofie Gynning

3 IVL Dice integrated into the scenography of Illusioner at Malmö Stadsteater.

For this poetic and introspective play by Ivan Vyrypaev, lighting designer Sofie Gynning introduced precise line effects to support the themes of perception, memory, and shifting realities. The IVL Dice were chosen not only for their visual qualities, but also for their ability to be safely used on a compact stage with actors, while remaining fully controllable within a standard lighting control.

As Head of Light Stuart Bailes explains:
“Sofie wanted to create a classic laser line effect and we chose the IVL Dice over a regular laser fixture because we wanted a fixture that was safe to work with on a small stage with actors in front of the beams but we also wanted a fixture that was easy for our lighting programmers to control without the need for another software, it streamlined the workflow. This also allowed us to be flexible with what we wanted to create with the lasers and able to respond to changes in the play as the process developed towards premiere.”

Used with careful timing, the fixtures were integrated into key moments of the performance, contributing to the visual language of the piece while respecting the constraints of a theatrical environment.
